Chiropractors & Chiropractic Treatment: Benefits and Risks
What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on the structure of the body, particularly the spine. Chiropractors manipulate the body’s alignment to relieve pain and improve function so the body can heal itself. The word “chiropractic” derives from chiros (hand) and practos (practice), it quite literally means “to be done by hand.” An adjustment is a very safe, specific, controlled force applied to your j oint to restore proper function and mobility.
Chiropractors use adjustments to restore joint function and support the nervous system. They help patients maintain optimal health while avoiding unnecessary drugs or surgery. An estimated 50 million Americans see a chiropractor each year. Most often, they are seeking relief from back pain, auto injuries, sports injuries, muscle strains, headaches, or pains in the neck, arms, and legs.
Accidents, falls, stress or overexertion can negatively impact your spine and other joints. When these occurrences happen they impact tissues, the nervous system and other areas of the body. Left unresolved, this can make you more susceptible to chronic problems. Adjustments correct these issues which result in reduced pain, increased movement and improved performance in your body.
Today, we offer other treatment options including postural and exercise education and ergonomic training (so, you walk, sit, and stand with less back strain). Chiropractors work in conjunction with primary care doctors and pain experts to get you to the most optimal health.

What is the Origin of Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic was invented in 1895 by Daniel D. Palmer, a layperson in Davenport, Iowa. Palmer was known for his practice of magnetic health beginning in the mid-1880s. His discovery of chiropractic is retold as the story of his search for the single cause of all disease. He found this single cause of disease when he “cured” the deafness of a janitor Harvey Lillard by spinal manipulation.
Lillard is said to have lost his hearing when he was in a stooped position and felt a pop in his neck. The best-described solution for this was discovered when Palmer was at dinner with his family, Lillard, and friends. Palmer cracked a joke and during the tagline hit Lillard on his upper back. Lillard told Palmer a few days later that he seemed to regain some of his hearing back.
Chiropractic’s true origin can be best known from a mystical nature. Palmer was an active spiritualist and believed that a flow of magnetism in our body may become blocked by obstructions along the spine. Chiropractic is best known for reducing these partial blockages in nerve fibers. This result in the body resuming to its normal characteristics as soon as it reaches normal tissue.
How Beneficial Is Chiropractic Therapy?
When opting for chiropractic care, there are many amazing benefits. It’s not just cracking your back and making you feel good. Chiropractic is a long-term source of treatment to help you bring you improved health in the following ways:
Rapid Pain Relief
Get Rid of Neck Pain and Headaches, Gastrointestinal Issues, Fertility Issues, Menstrual Discomfort, and Ear Infections
Chiropractic has also been shown to effectively treat osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.
Holistic Treatment without the Need for Medications and Surgery
Treatment is at the Source of the Symptom
Personalized Treatment Programs
Improves the Entire Musculoskeletal and Nervous System
Chiropractic Supports Many Illnesses such as Chemotherapy and Cancer Patients
Prevent Joint Dysfunction
The spinal subluxations (minute dislocations) interfere with the bodies natural flow of energy. This can cause an increased risk of illness and disease by serving as a root for weakened organs. By reducing and realigning the vertebrates in the spine the body resumes to its normal characteristics.
How Reliable Are Chiropractic Adjustments?
Chiropractic adjustments are proven to be very reliable. All treatment is based first on accurate diagnosis of the source of your pain and your health conditions. The chiropractor should be well informed of your medical history, including ongoing medical conditions, current medications, surgical history, and any lifestyle factors.
Is it Dangerous to Have a Chiropractor Adjust My Neck?
The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) estimates that there are roughly 60,000 chiropractors in the United States. All chiropractors are health care professionals, required to be licensed medical Doctors of Chiropractic (DC). Each year chiropractors from all chiropractic colleges are required to take part in continuing education. This keeps them on top of the most innovative treatment options and in alignment with chiropractic guidelines.
Do Chiropractors Really Help Back Pain?
At least 70% of adults will experience low back pain (LBP) at some time in their lives. The benefit of chiropractic care is it offers rapid relief to patients. Our culture is evolving into a more common use of medications and surgeries. Chiropractic care includes a holistic, spiritual, and metaphysical treatment which has been through the test of time. For over 120 years chiropractic care has been correcting issues of the spine, to treat all sorts of pain effectively.
Risk of Chiropractic Care
The main risk of chiropractic care, is in the chiropractic physician themself. The science of chiropractic is a widely recognized and proven treatment. Chiropractic students spend 4 years of intensive training before having the opportunity to go into the health care profession. The adjustments they make are very specific and depend upon their deep understanding of the human anatomy. Do not try these adjustments at home without a Licensed Doctor of Chiropractic for risk of injury.
